All patients at both these centers are examined and treated by Prof. S. P. Shrestha (M.S.., D.O.M.S) who has worked in Nepal in the field of Ophthalmology since 1982.

He started his ophthalmic career in Nepal as house officer and later consultant ophthalmologist at Nepal Eye Hospital, the first eye hospital of Nepal. He then worked as Assistant Medical Director of Sagarmatha Chaudhary Eye Hospital at Lahan, which is one of largest eye hospitals in the world with over 500 ophthalmic beds and he ran this eye hospital most of the time alone, from 1987 to 1991. When he joined this hospital, it was a 42-bedded eye hospital and by the time he left this hospital, it was a well-established eye hospital with over 500 beds. At present, more than 600 cataracts are performed in this hospital every day. Together with Dr. A Hennig, program director of this hospital, Dr. Shrestha developed appropriate technology to perform high volume high quality low cost cataract surgery suitable for developing countries and which is now performed in most developing countries in the world. During this period, he published and presented several scientific papers. During this period, he also ran and supervised the community based rehabilitation program run by the hospital for three districts Siraha, Saptari and Udaypur during this period.

Dr. Shrestha then worked as Founder Program Director of the Kavre Eye Care Program and established 20 bedded eye departments at Sheer Memorial Hospital, Banepa. He also supervised the community based rehabilitation program in Kavre district run by Hellen Keller International. He worked in this capacity from 1991 to 1994. During this period, Dr. Shrestha also ran a weekly Retina clinic at Nepal Eye Hospital, Kathmandu and worked as consultant ophthalmologist at Lions Eye Care Center, Tinkune, Kathmandu. 

In 1994, Dr. Shrestha joined BP Koirala Institute of Health Sciences, Dharan as founder Head of Department and Associate Prof. and established the eye department in this institute. During this period, he also served as a member of the executive committee of this institute. He also worked as the member of the Governing council of this institute for three years. During the entire period, he was the member secretary of the Academic committee of the institute and helped to formulate the MBBS and Nursing curriculum of the institute. He started the corneal ulcer research project in this department as Co-director.

From 1997 to 2000 July, Dr Shrestha worked as Medical Director of Himalaya Eye Hospital, Pokhara. He was responsible for running Himalaya Eye Hospital and supervised the wide based community eye care services run by Himalaya eye hospital along with 2 district eye care centers at Kalikot and Jumla in Karnali Zone and one at Baglung. He also served as Prof and exchange faculty of Rotterdam Eye Hospital, Netherlands under a faculty and resident exchange program with Himalaya Eye Hospital, Pokhara. He also supervised community based eye services of Foundation eye care Himalaya, Netherlands at Sikkim, Tibet and Laddakh.

In 1997, Dr. Shrestha established the eye department at Manipal College of Medical Sciences, Pokhara, Nepal. He served as Professor and founding head of department at this department since then till February 2007. From February 2007, Dr. Shrestha is working as Prof. of Ophthalmology at this department.

Dr. Shrestha has performed over 40,000.00 eye surgeries in Nepal and India. Besides performing routine eye surgeries, he is a well experienced vitreous retinal and autoplastic surgeon. He has trained in ophthalmic microsurgery in Japan and in Medical education in Nine Wells Medical College, University of Dundee, Scotland which is the WHO recognized Center for Medical Education.

For his various contributions in the field of Ophthalmology in the Asia Pacific Region, Dr. Shrestha received “Distinguished service award” from Asia Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology in 1997.
